At only 18 years old, Felix Auger-Aliassime or FA2, is making waves in the tennis world. It looks like he could be the next break out star. He’s the only teenager at the Miami Open and is playing his best tennis.
He’s just won his third-round match against Hurkacz, another promising young player who upset Dominic Thiem, the number three seed, in the second round. The young FA2 already has an impressive style of play. He’s lean, and at six foot four he’s an imposing force on the court.
But it isn’t FA2’s physique that makes him so special. It’s his poise. This is a kid who knows how to stay focused and keep his composure. He says in interviews that he plays tennis by trusting his instincts. This means that when he’s playing aggressively it’s not out of ego but out of a knowledge of when he needs to turn on the gas.
Like any 18-year-old, FA2 can get emotional when things don’t go his way. And he’s been known to show his frustrations on the court. But he only lets himself be angry or frustrated for a second. Then it’s back to laser focus. This kind of game is impressive for a young kid and bodes well for the rest of his career.
Felix has been training seriously since he was 13 years old. He’s spent time at the National Training Centre in Montreal. FA2 says that’s where his game really changed. All of a sudden he was playing against top players who could one day turn pro. Five years later, Felix finds himself in the fourth round of the Miami Open.
FA2 still has a ways to go to prove that he can hang around as a top player. But he’s had as good a start as any.
Is Felix Auger-Aliassime the next tennis great?
