DeMar DeRozan is getting reflective as he goes back to Toronto for the first time since leaving the Raptors for San Antonio. Last season, DeRozan was the Raptors’ start guard and best player. He had no intention of leaving the team and was upset when he was traded. The Raptors were after Kawhi Leonard and were willing to shake up their whole team to get him.
DeRozan was rightfully angered by the trade but has made the most of his situation in San Antonio. He’s played well for the Spurs this season and to cap it off, he had one of his best games ever against his former team.
The Raptors came to San Antonio in early January and got beaten 125 to 107. DeRozan had a triple-double that night, scoring 21 points, with 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. It was his first ever triple-double and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
In trading DeRozan away in order to build a team around Leonard, the Raptors sent a message to DeRozan that he was old news and not worth keeping. Instead of letting it hurt his ego, DeRozan kept his head up and showed his old team that they’d made a mistake (at least that’s what Spurs fans thought as they booed Kawhi Leonard off the court during the triple-double game).
Unfortunately for DeRozan, he started to struggle after his big game against the Raptors. February hasn’t been a good month in terms of numbers for the guard and he’s dealt with some minor injuries as well. But perhaps going back to Toronto for a game is just what DeRozan needs to get back on his game.
This is DeRozan’s 10th year in the league. He’s getting older and dealing with the consequences of age. But he’s showed he’s resilient and isn’t done wowing crowds just yet.
