Emiliano Sala was on his way up in the soccer world. The 28-year-old Argentine national had made his home for years in the small French village of Carquefou, playing for Nantes. While Nantes is not one of the best French teams, Sala enjoyed his life in the quiet French village and appeared content with his standing in the soccer world.
But then an offer came in from Cardiff City in the English Premier League. Cardiff City, in Wales, is not one of the best teams in the Premier League but playing for them would mean a chance to play against some of the best teams and players in the world. Sala was conflicted about leaving his home in France but playing in the Premier League too big an opportunity to pass up.
So Sala made the decision to leave and said goodbye to his life in Carquefou. He boarded a small private plane and set out across the English Channel. A bit into the flight, Sala sent a message to some teammates, saying how he was exhausted and that the plane he was on didn’t seem to be too sturdy.
About an hour into the flight, Jersey, a small island in the English Channel received a request from the plane to land. But soon after, cruising at 2,300 feet, the plane went off radar.
A search party was formed immediately. Planes and boats were sent out into the Channel and didn’t stop searching until well after midnight. But nothing was found.
Cardiff City and Nantes are both heartbroken over Sala’s disappearance. There has been a great outpouring of support from fans. It remains unclear what happened with the plane and what exactly went wrong. As we continue to search for answers, the thoughts and prayers of the soccer world are with Sala and his family.
