Jason Kidd is remembered as one of the best point guards of all time. So it’s no surprise that this year he is being inducted into the basketball Hall Of Fame. Kidd wowed NBA audiences during his long career with his quick moves and ability to distribute the ball. But over the years many of us have forgotten Kidd’s heroic rise to fame.
We all remember the hype about LeBron James as he came out of high school. He was all over sports media. At the time, when James was just 17 years old, he was predicted to be one of the best players ever. Of course, as we now know, those predictions were right.
Jason Kidd came into the league in a different era. Media coverage was not as intense as it is nowadays. There was no social media so the public was no saturated with coverage of young sports stars like they are today. But there was still a lot of buzz around Jason Kidd.
All the talk about the Bay Area point guard started in high school. To say the Kidd was a teenage superstar may be an understatement. His games in high school drew so many fans that the team had to host games in a professional arena that seated 12,000. As a high school senior he was featured in Sports Illustrated. The picture the magazine chose is of a young Kidd on his bed, surrounded by letters from college programs that desperately wanted the rising point guard.
Kidd ended up going with the University of California. In his freshman year he played 29 games and averaged 13 points. He only got better his sophomore year. And that was all he played in college because in 1994 Jason Kidd was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks.
On To The Hall Of Fame
Kidd played from 1994 to 2013 and averaged 8.7 assists, 1.9 steals, and 12.6 blocks per games. He played for four teams in his career, starting in Dallas, then moving on to Phoenix, New Jersey, and New York.
It’s hard to talk about Jason Kidd and not bring up his domestic assault charge to which he pleaded guilty. His record was later expunged and he later on took out a restraining order against his wife. People may not talk about Kidd’s domestic abuse allegations now, but at the time he was heckled on the court.
