Odell Beckham Jr. has been a sensation. He’s thought by many to be the most valuable player in the league. He’s certainly the top receiver around. So why did the Giants get rid of him?
The news comes as a big surprise as they just signed Odell to a massive deal last year. And the Giants are not exactly in great shape. They had a losing record last year and were not close to making the playoffs. So losing their best player seems like the last thing the Giants’ management should want.
But Beckham Jr. was a handful. He’s incredibly vocal off the field and not always in a positive way. He criticized Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning and the entire team in interviews. And while on the field he’s an asset, on the sidelines, Beckham Jr. often causes problems. He’s been known to throw fits and even got into it with a kicking net once.
Finally the Giants’ management had enough. Perhaps they thought that because they weren’t winning with Beckham Jr. anyway, trading him away might not be that big of a loss. But it’s hard to know what exactly the Giants’ strategy is. Their plan is to bring back Eli Manning next season even though he’s at the end of his rope. Now their star wide receiver is gone. It’s not shaping up to be a great 2019 for New York.
Good News for Cleveland
While the Giants are faltering, things are looking up in Cleveland. Now their young stud quarterback, Baker Mayfield, has a new target in Beckham Jr. That pairing could prove to be special for the Browns. Cleveland is another team that hasn’t had much success in recent years but 2019 could be the year they really turn things around.
